NFL: Chicago Bears Defeats San Francisco 49ers

The Chicago Bears got what they needed from everyone to get a big win. The Bears erased a 10-point third-quarter deficit by scoring 19 unanswered points to beat the 49ers 19-10 in the season opener Sunday at Soldier Field. After a sluggish start, quarterback Justin Fields threw a pair touchdown passes in the second half to Dante Pettis and Equanimeous St. Brown, and a fourth-quarter interception by safety Eddie Jackson set up a Khalil Herbert rushing touchdown. Coach Matt Eberflus earned his first win as an NFL head coach and expressed his excitement about starting 1-0. "It's a happy feeling, it really is," Eberflus said. "When you see they're out of timeouts and the clock's going down and the rain is coming down. And it's a good feeling. It was exciting and for the first victory, and I'm excited for the guys too. I'm excited for everybody, offense, defense, kicking. I'm excited for the organization. It was fun. Fields threw for just 19 yards in the first half, completing 3 of his 9 pass attempts.

The second-year quarterback finished the game with 8 of 17 completions for 121 yards and the two scores, earning an 85.7 rating. "I think we were just trying to find a rhythm [in the first half]," Fields said. "The offense, at least, we were dealing with long fields and our defense did a great job dealing with the short fields that they got, [held] them in the red zone for three points on one of the drives. So yeah, I think we're just trying to get in a rhythm. We were backed up so when you're backed up like that, you just can't use the whole playbook. But the second half, we found a rhythm and we executed so I'm proud of the guys." The Bears defense excelled throughout the entire game, generating two takeaways. They held the 49ers to three points in the second half and held quarterback Trey Lance to a 46.4 completion percentage and a 50.3 rating. On the 49ers' first drive of the game, cornerback Jaylon Johnson forced a fumble, which was recovered by rookie safety Jaquan Brisker. "That was great. Their own drive, they had some momentum and we stopped it with that," Eberflus said. "That happens. I can go back to countless examples where the guys get in the red zone. If you just hang in there on defense and you keep pounding the rock, good things will happen, and that's what happened. Jaylon punched it, Brisker recovered it. It was an outstanding play. That happens a lot of times on the perimeter. The ball comes off the body and you get a punchout." San Francisco's defense quickly got the ball back as Talanoa Hufanga intercepted Fields at the Chicago 49. After a scoreless first quarter, the 49ers reached the end zone with 10:17 to play in the first half. The drive was led by Lance's 20-yard pass to Ray Ray McCloud. On the subsequent third down, defensive tackle Justin Jones was offsides, giving the 49ers a first down at the four-yard line. Receiver Deebo Samuel then found the end zone from six yards out to give San Francisco a 7-0 lead. The 49ers increased their lead to 10-0 on the first drive of the third quarter as Robbie Gould kicked a 25-yard field goal. Lance's 44-yard pass to receiver Jeff Wilson Jr., who beat cornerback Kyler Gordon downfield, put the 49ers at the Chicago 16. Lance rushed for another first down on the drive, but linebacker Roquan Smith and rookie defensive end Dominique Robinson teamed up for a sack on third down to hold the 49ers to the field goal. Fields then orchestrated the Bears' first scoring drive of the day. On third down, his throw to St. Brown was incomplete, but a 49ers' facemask penalty kept the drive alive. Two plays later, Fields escaped the pocket and rolled to his left, finding Pettis wide open across the field. The pair connected for a 51-yard touchdown pass, cutting into the 49ers lead at 10-7. "What a great play, the vision by Justin to see that and throw it back there was a great play," Eberflus said. "And that's the kind of plays he can make. That's what makes him dangerous because he can throw on schedule throws, but man he's got the off-schedule throws too and we've always said he's that he's an outstanding deep ball thrower. He can throw the ball deep, accurately, so we're all excited about that play for sure." After the Bears defense forced a punt, Fields led another 10-play, 84-yard touchdown drive. The quarterback opened the drive with a 22-yard pass to receiver Byron Pringle. On third down, Fields scrambled and was hit while sliding, resulting in a 15-yard penalty and a Bears first down at the San Francisco 41. Fields then hit St. Brown in the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown score. Kicker Cairo Santos missed the extra point, but the Bears took a 13-10 lead with 12:45 left in the game. On the 49ers next drive, Jackson intercepted Lance and returned it to the San Francisco 21, setting up another score for the Bears. On second down, Herbert rushed for five yards, and defensive holding penalty on the same play led to a Bears first down at the 3. Herbert then found the end zone from three yards out, building the Bears lead to 19-10 after another missed extra point. "We had a little bit of rough sledding in the first half, and I thought that the guys came out in the second half and gained some momentum in that drive right before halftime," Eberflus said. "I thought that was really good. The defense in the first half gave up a couple of plays. We had to shore some things up in the halftime, so we did that. So I thought the guys did a nice job at halftime and it's a four-quarter game. You've got to play the second half, and that's what we're built for. "We always tell the guys, 'hey, we have mental and physical stamina for what reason?' And it is because of the way we practice and the way we play and we're able to stay focused when it is the second half in those critical moments and they can play and be focused in those moments, so that was really good."

Argentina Defeats Italy to Win the Finalissima

Argentina put in an outstanding performance against Italy, beating them 3-0 at London’s Wembley Stadium to help them secure the 2022 Finalissima. The game was a clash between the two winners of the recent EURO 2020 and Copa America.

A first-half goal from Lautaro Martínez and Ángel Di María helped put the Copa America winners ahead of the European Champions before a late goal from Paulo Dybala assisted in sealing the victory. Both goals were assisted by captain Lionel Messi, who received the Man of the Match award for his stellar performance. The Finalissima, formally known as Artemio Franchi Cup, was last held in 1993, in which Argentina won as well. The late forward Diego Maradona lifted the trophy upon defeating Denmark in a penalty shootout.

Tottenham vs Arsenal LIVE Updates And Trivia

Tottenham host Arsenal tonight in one of the most exciting north London derbies of recent times. Both clubs are vying for a spot in the Premier League top four and this evening’s result could determine who gets to feature in the Champions League next season. Spurs are four points behind the Gunners ahead of the fixture and a win would see them close the gap to just one point. In the reverse fixture earlier this season, Tottenham succumbed to a 3-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium but they can now inflict their own home win on their north London rivals and take a step closer to the top four. It is fitting that the final Champions League spot is being battled between such fierce rivals but Arsenal will arguably be more eager to get back to the European top flight after missing out on European football altogether last season for the first time in 25 years. Mikel Arteta’s men have been handed a boost ahead of the game as Ben White looks likely to return to help the Gunners reach the Champions League, as a win over Spurs would put an unassailable seven points between the clubs.

Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka both have the chance to become the first Englishman to score for the Gunners in home and away fixtures against Spurs in a season since Ian Wright in 1993-94. Arsenal are on the cusp of ending a five-year wait for Champions League football as their victory over Leeds solidified their place in the Premier League top four. The Gunners will return to Europe’s elite competition if they win at Tottenham on Thursday night as Mikel Arteta continues to turn around a season that began in the worst possible way. Arsenal were rock bottom of the Premier League, without a point or a goal, heading into the September international break but are now on the verge of a top-four finish. Here, we look at just how Arteta has managed to instigate such a recovery. The Gunners will return to Europe’s elite competition if they win at Tottenham on Thursday night. The four goals scored by Eddie Nketiah in his last four top-flight games is just one fewer than he managed in his first 52 Premier League appearances. Son Heung-min is only the second Tottenham player to score 20 Premier League goals in a season without any of them being penalties, emulating Gareth Bale in 2012-13 (21). He has both scored (12) and been involved in (17) more top-flight goals in 2022 than any other player and after failing to score or assist in any of his first nine league games against Arsenal, Son has three goals and two assists in his last four North London derby appearances. Arsenal have gone seven league matches without a clean sheet since a 1-0 win at Aston Villa on 19th March. Victory for Arsenal would guarantee them their highest Premier League finish since the 2015-16 campaign when they finished second. It would also be the first time since then that they have finished above Spurs. The Gunners have registered four consecutive league wins while conceding at least once in every game for the first time since a run of five from February to March 2012. In the build-up to Thursday, Antonio Conte has been “super animated”, seeking to ensure his players are ready to rampage into this one. He has used a few little techniques for motivation, and the suspension of this game in January has been mentioned, as has the home support. This is what Conte is best at. Tottenham’s performance in big games has been the most positive aspect of his brief time in charge so far, and is one major reason he has them in contention for the top four. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have improved in big games themselves, but their season has mostly been about winning the games they should – which is why they don’t absolutely have to win this one. That is Spurs’ necessity, but it’s a difficult balance to strike. “Balance” is itself a word that has returned to the discussion around the north London derby, as both clubs face up to the fixture’s biggest game in around a decade. Arsenal and Tottenham meet tonight in a golden opportunity to settle the top-four race and strike a blow to their closest rivals

PSG 3-2 win Vs Leipzig

It might sound strange, but despite scoring two goals and winning the game for Paris Saint-Germain with an outrageous Panenka, Lionel Messi did not really have a very good game. Still, nobody at a festive Parc des Princes seemed to mind too much. After looking wooden and curiously passive for an hour, Paris came to life in the last 25 minutes, beating an impressive Leipzig side despite having little cohesion and not much in the way of a tactical plan, but two of the most irresistible attackers on the planet. With three defeats out of three, Leipzig are now virtually eliminated, and for all their spirit and running, the spotlight will now fall on their new coach Jesse Marsch.

By contrast, you suspect even Mauricio Pochettino does not really know how good this Paris side is. The attacking combinations are still being drilled, the midfield looks overstretched and occasionally the defence gives the impression it wants to run and hide. In the meantime just savour the entertainment, and the burgeoning bromance between Messi and Kylian Mbappé, who for all their differences, for all the operatic, highly strung drama of recent months, look like they are beginning to enjoy each other’s company. It was Mbappé who laid on Messi’s first goal and created his second, winning a penalty and allowing Messi a free run at it. In stoppage time Messi returned the favour, spurning the chance of a hat-trick to let Mbappé take the spot-kick, which the France forward duly blazed over the bar. No matter. PSG are back on top of Group A, although not without a few scares. Even from the early stages you could sense that both teams were there to be got at, and both knew it too. Leipzig pushed high and got the ball forward quickly, trying to create space for their attacking wing-backs. Paris, meanwhile, would look to the spaces in behind, trying to release Mbappé into the open channels. And it was from just such an opening that he got his early goal. It came via a smart low finish at the end of one of those terrifying, prowling dribbles in which the defender Willi Orban this time is almost paralysed with indecision and so ends up being led into a sort of doomed dance. The goal itself was greeted with the imperial assent of a crowd that without wanting to put too fine a point on it is used to going 1-0 up an awful lot. Perhaps the only consolation for Leipzig was that chasing the game required little change in style.

Actually, there was another: PSG will generally always give you a chance. This is, after all, a team that have kept just four clean sheets in 14 games this season. And even as several good opportunities came and went to Konrad Laimer and André Silva (twice), there simply was not the same sort of jeopardy you get when you miss a chance against, say, Chelsea. Slowly Leipzig were beginning to feel their way into the game, find the spaces. And shortly before the half-hour they were able to stroll the ball up the pitch and work it unfussily from right to left, where Angeliño put in one of his trademark early crosses for Silva to finish from a tight angle. It had been coming. After a short truce at the end of the first half, Leipzig made their move at the start of the second. Again it came on the counter, the ball spread left to Angeliño, the penalty area packed with white-shirted runners. Nordi Mukiele, the Parisian native, volleyed in Angeliño’s delicious cross, and all of a sudden the heat was on Pochettino, who with precious few attacking alternatives on the bench could change personnel but not the system. What of Messi? These hectic hard-running games no longer really suit his style: it’s worth remembering that his last game against Bundesliga opposition ended in an 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich. He had just one touch in the Leipzig penalty area in the first half. Still, all genius needs is a glimpse. And after bundling the ball in from close range from Mbappé’s unselfish pass he added the coup de grace seven minutes later: an irreverent dink after Mohamed Simakan had pushed the speeding Mbappé over in the area. In a way, Mbappé’s late missed penalty – awarded after a foul on Achraf Hakimi felt strangely apt: the comedy bassoon that brought the curtain down on another riotous Parisian farce.

Cristiano Ronaldo Is Coming Back To Manchester United!

Soccer Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo could be headed back to the English Premier League and he's being linked to the crosstown rivals of the team where he became an icon. According to multiple reports, Ronaldo is being linked to a transfer to powerhouse Manchester City, winners of three of the last four Premier League titles. City, which just lost former striker Sergio Agüero to Barcelona, is coached by Pep Guardiola, largely considered to be one of the top soccer managers in the world. The transfer would be a seismic shift in a summer that has already seen some significant changes, none bigger than Lionel Messi leaving Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain.

Ronaldo, 36, is one of the most decorated soccer players in history. A five-time Ballon d'Or winner, Ronaldo has also won seven domestic championships and five Champions League titles in his 20 seasons in European soccer. Ronaldo became an international soccer star in the early-mid 2000s, when he played for Manchester United for six seasons. Manchester City and Manchester United are bitter rivals. Before joining Manchester United, he played one season for Sporting CP, a club in his native Portugal. But after he left Manchester United, he went on to star for Spanish giants Real Madrid, where he played for nine seasons from 2009-18. As rumors have started to swirl over Ronaldo's future, he posted a message to his verified Instagram account on August 17, referring to the speculation about his future as a "disrespect." Ronaldo has won the Ballon d'Or five times in his career, helping Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus all win league titles. He has a combined five Champions League titles in his career and could help Manchester City win its first after losing in the final last year. Ronaldo remains a threat on the pitch, scoring 60 goals in 66 Serie A matches over the last two seasons. It could create an exciting partnership if Manchester City is able to complete the move before the transfer window closes Tuesday.

Portugal advances, Ronaldo scores 2 to reach 109 goals

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two penalties to tie the overall men’s scoring record with 109 goals and Portugal advanced to the round of 16 at the European Championship after a 2-2 draw with France on Wednesday. Ronaldo's tournament-leading fourth and fifth goals moved him level with former Iran striker Ali Daei at 109, while also extending his overall tournament record to 14. Karim Benzema scored both of France's goals, his first ever at the tournament after failing to find the target at Euro 2008 and 2012. Defending champion Portugal finished in third place in the group, one spot behind Germany. France, which had already qualified, was first.

Ronaldo scored the opening goal in the 31st minute and then equalized from the spot in the 60th after Benzema put World Cup champion France ahead 2-1 shortly after halftime from Paul Pogba’s pass. Benzema also scored a penalty in first-half injury time after Kylian Mbappe was fouled. It was Benzema’s first international goal in nearly six years after losing his place in the team following a fallout with coach Didier Deschamps. Pogba almost scored a winner for France midway through the second half, but Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio made a superb one-handed save to tip his curling shot off the crossbar and then saved Antoine Griezmann’s follow up shot. France will face Switzerland in the next round and Portugal will take on Belgium. The 36-year-old Ronaldo’s historic run began 17 years ago when he scored his first goal for Portugal in a 2-1 loss to Greece during the group stage at Euro 2004. Before Wednesday, he had never previously scored against France. He put that right, but only after teammate Danilo had received treatment on the field after France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris misread a free kick and punched Danilo’s face. Lloris was shown a yellow card by Spanish referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz, who then immediately signaled for medical assistance and awarded a penalty. Danilo’s legs were writhing for a few seconds as he received treatment from medics. France was given a penalty just before halftime after Nelson Semedo cut across Mbappe as he was running to meet another pass from Pogba. The decision stood following a quick video review. Benzema had missed his previous penalty for Les Bleus on his international comeback in a friendly against against Wales earlier this month. He didn't mis this time. Ronaldo went to shake Benzema's hand and even put his arm around him as they walked off smiling at halftime. They then swapped jerseys as they walked down the tunnel.
