Nice to get another theory confirmed with shuri/gunko being in love with brook. I have to say i really enjoyed this chapter, brook has such a sad backstory living on garbage pile, eating bugs and getting beat up by marines just for curry powder. Finally we got the origin of brook asking for panties, found this really funny, especially when shuri told him to take his own advice and hit him with a metal object.I really enjoyed this chapter and this is the second time brook made me cry. You can just feel the tragedy brewing and i don't think it's going to be pretty. What's really sad about it is the fact that the tragedy of the rumbar pirates was already so heartbreaking.

Also, i love candelle. I can understand why brook had a crush on her. And i hope she isn't the one that leads the tragedy. I kind of hope it is shuri after all. We got the fake out of everyone thinking loki was bad, and it being misunderstood. I would really love in this case for brook to think it was shuri and not to get the surprise it was candelle or imu mind-controlling anyone to do it. As soon as brook said he was the commander of a battle convoy of a certain kingdom back in thriller bark, i knew there was more to his story than before the rumbar pirates, and that we would find out more about it just like sanji's germa backstory.

Esperia could have been another davy bastion. I really doubt that across the years, god valley was the only location of the davy bloodline. Brook as a child, and king ruwen look way too similar to kid and adult blackbeard. Imu’s obsession with blue hair royals.

Well this is almost the farthest back we've gone in one piece, theres the saturn flashback 200 years ago with the giant robot emet, basically just showing us the gorosei are not aging. And then noland flashback 400 years ago. 70 years ago garp, sengoku and roger are all children. Like all 5 to 10. We know this kingdom will be destroyed end of flashback, what i think is gonna happen is imu is gonna descend on the island for some reason. Gorosei/gods knights seem to know what happens when imu descends to lower realm like they've seen it before. So brook might recognize nerona imu in this form. Right now they think imu is just another gods knight. They dont realize he is the leader of the world government yet.Reuven is 100% gonna get murdered by some scum marine or 1 of the knights of imu. There is zero chance he'll get to live long in this flashback. He might have a fugly face but u can tell his heart is in the right place. Got these ideas from main sub, but this seems to be setting up for somehow "love" or another reason (maybe brooks is davy clan?) and the ice will melt? Maybe brooks will sing and it'll awaken gunko from her frozen sleep.

While i would be fine with any of the above, it does question what "stakes" will occur if imu has to leave. Gunko has death flags all over her, just end the poor girl's misery. Aside that though, no one else will die is my guess. If by this point of the story, the most seemingly evil and sociopathic character cannot even kill or eliminate any enemies while they have the complete upper hand, then i cannot imagine any tension left for the rest of the final saga.

Elbaf has been phenomenal otherwise, but depending on how the climax ends, i'll know well with the tone of how the final war will go. If gunko dying can be very sad, then i'll accept it. If she's turned into another member of luffy's growing side characters (bonney, lilith), then i'm going to be very confused.

Which is fine. So those marines were working with the moulon family to smuggle drugs or something? Surely a prince has some say over marines literally committing crimes on the soil of their country? So, brook had an awful childhood, as per tradition, and was rescued from squalor by reuven. No wonder he's so upset by shuri supposedly killing the guy.I am not sold on the idea that candelle is a god's knight, but even if she were, what the hell was she doing on esperia, being the personal guard of the country's prince? Have we seen/heard any such thing before, where a god's knight - not any of the cipher pols, or even marine intelligence - goes undercover long-term? If she is a celestial dragons, there had better be a good reason for this ruse, instead of the gorosei's usual hamfisted approach. I like the depiction of shuri's crush on brook, and brook's complete disinterest, while still being a big brother figure. Good balance.

This brook flashback overall is so odd to me. Not on its own, mind you the story’s shaping up well - but where oda decided to place it. The love interest is frozen in a block of ice and two of the most important characters of the entire series are duking it out.

“Love interest” isn’t the right way to describe brook and shuri, so i stand corrected. However, in the grand scheme of elbaph we’re talking about some very unimportant characters. Hopefully this pays off in some fashion.

I just realized the possibility of the tragedy of gunko's defeat. The flashback highlights how much she loves brook and that he always reject her. And we learned the knights could be defeated permanently if the steel heart is destroyed. I fear that shuri will literally give her heart to brook so he can break it.Brook singing to make his death quicker and less painful was a sucker punch in the gut for two reasons. It made me think of child luffy who never stopped expecting ace to show up to save him to the shock of ace and sabo, luffy having faith whether it was justified or not, while brook gave up on anyone including big bro coming to save him from the start. The second, brook doing exactly that later on with the rumbar pirates.

I'm going to have to reread/rewatch a lot of brook content at this point, but i believe it was even brook's suggestion that the rumbars all sing while dying in the dark too, to cheer them up. The reveal that this has always been the way he thinks since he was a kid is really heavy, that's for sure. And then he doesn't fall apart until they're all dead. That always got to me, but now it's gonna be worse. Thanks, oda! /positive. Even though i am invested in brook and shuri's story, i have to admit i am a bit tired of flashbacks, specially how this is the second on the same arc where we have one into another, and that the build up to the climax of elbaph was cut by this one. I just hope that this will wrap up it nicely.

Initially i was thinking the powder moulon family was transporting was dance powder but they said it was a drug. I wonder what this drug is or it's relevant at all. Reuven is a swell guy it seems but candelle looks suspicious. Trusted blade is what gunko was at god valley and candelle uses that term for herself here. Is she really a knight of god? Why would she be working as the commander of the battle convoy? And then proceed to become queen? That's hell of a covert operation there if she's really a knight of god.I feel like this confirms that the reason present day gunko only wears a panties without trousers/shorts is because she wanted to be seen somehow by brook. Did she know that he had eaten yomi yomi no mi and thus would live a longer life than a normal human being? Would it be the last effort that shuri-soon-to-be-brainwashed-into-gunko made, so brook could recognize and save her someday? I like this chapter, but the part where brook asks to see someones panties feels a bit off to me. I had understood it that the reason he does that bowadays is because 50 years alone on a ship made hkm go a bit crazy and not be so good with boundaries anymore. I suppose he was always like that though. No need to guess or speculate, candelle is definitely a god's knight. The most obvious proof is that she never aged when brook was 11 years old or even when shuri was 14.

Besides that, it really hurts that brook has the hardest backstory of all the shs. Little robin may have been alone for a good 10 years. But brook maintaining his sanity while surrounded by his dear friend's bones for years is something very difficult for anyone to do.

I feel like esperia's fall will be caused by reuven's compassion. The trashyard reminds me a lot of goa kingdom and sorbet kingdom. Celestials will want him to segregate the poor, he won't yield, and they will kill him. Something like that. The way oda can get you to love a character in no time is crazy, only known prince/king reuven for two chapters and i know i'm going to be absolutely gutted about whatever goes down with his death.Rook was 11 when he mentioned a little brother in his song (which doesn't necessarily mean he has a literal brother but go with me here), so his brother would be anywhere from 1-10 years younger. Brook is 90 in current day, so his brother would be 80 - 89 presently. Garp is 78 for reference.

Rocks d xebec first infiltrated the flower room 56 years ago, would have been 24- 33 if he was the little brother. Died 38 years ago, would have been 42-51. Unless i miscalculated i think there is a non-0 chance brook could be davy d. Brook. Brook's old crew got sick 52 years ago. He mentioned kind of remembering roger as an upstart. Xebec started actually building out his crew 48 years ago, so brook wouldn't be aware of rocks d xebec too much because he didn't have a crew yet and he seemingly just missed out on rock's golden age of piracy.

We also now know brook has a unique musical repertoire, so him knowing binks sake and also singing about slaves and kings could come from family history instead of being learned in espiria. Finally, young brook looks nearly identical to baby teach.

Candelle is so sus already. Reuven saying the world is coming to an end with scum like this in government backed positions and candelle barely responding, calling herself a trusted blade in the same way that gunko is referred to during the human hunt, and then chastising reuven for protecting brook due to his position. Pretty cool that reuven is a two sword style guy tho!I definitely feel as though the purpose of this flashback is going to be showing the reader why imu wants vivi, i expect whatever happens to shuri will be directly connected to what imu wants to do with her. Especially since they're both blue haired princesses. I find the parallels between brook, the present day giant children, and loki to be an important development. Young brook due to his hardships longs for school, collun has the opportunity to go to school but refuses because he longs to be a “real” warrior, while loki also suffered hardships but scoffed at the school his father built because harald’s efforts didn’t protect him from abuse.

It’s also interesting that this flashback is continuing the concept of idols being unattainable that started in the first flashback. I look forward to seeing how this ties into brook getting his devil fruit powers.

We're getting closer to what really happened in the shuri incident, where it all went wrong. Also, brook at 11 looks very identical to toddler blackbeard ngl. What if the real reason esperia fell was because of brook himself? He could hypothetically be a davy clan member and that his branch settled in esperia since family branches are often spread out worldwide, albeit he's the only survivor as the rest of his family starved to death unfortunately. And the one that ratted him out was candel who may have somehow found out, which most are speculating to be a hk, and sold him out and used her own daughter shuri as payment against her will. And the rest is history. Could make for an intriguing plot twist if you ask me.Least obvious hidden prince of all time. Candelle slaying navy men against the advice of all the other soldiers and without having a clear emotional reaction is definitely adding to her suspicion. But would i be having those suspicions if people on this forum hadn't told me to? Maybe not. I know oda has nami face syndrome but that cefran heir being her spitting image is making me suspicious. I would not put it past him to slap a great-grandmother hidden away in this backstory. Also, i learned the word zaibatsu today. Living in a trash heap and friends with a noble, he has quite a bit in common with luffy. Or, what we really should take from this is that there are children living in trash heaps all over the world, because the world government doesn't protect anyone from poverty.

After robin, sanji had a pretty emotional backstory, but i never expected brook’s to be one as well. I don’t think oda had the story pre-planned, but this is turning into a really good one. Wonder if this is building up to brook gaining another power boost cause the chapters seem to indicate brook was a lot stronger when he was human compared to how he is now. So brook had an obvious love interest, and now she's basically doomed to either be killed in battle or turned to dust by imu.I swear, this poor guy's life has a lot of bumps. I liked this chapter a lot since i am a fan of brook. I think it be even better when it is read after the arc is over when we are not looking forward to how the climax ends. Was also hoping younger brook would continue to avoid the gag, because i think it really only works as part of his isolation insanity since in flashbacks he seems so normal compared to thriller bark.

That said, i remember reading a tumblr by a bilingual reader who shared a bunch of stuff that's less clear to other audiences, and apparently yes it is extremely funny in japanese but not really in a way you can fully convey in english. He uses extremely polite and archaic and dignified forms of speech in japanese, and it's the outrageous contrast between that style of speech and his rude questions and burping and farting and getting food on himself that's what's actually funny. Like imagine he sounds like the queen of england. It's like that.

His skeleton pun jokes are also pretty high-effort in japanese apparently.

The classic oda flashback in a flashback and i didn't think he would go so in-depth with brook's childhood. He really suffered a lot and with leuven you actually can't predict how a character will act based on design. Two entire pages of brook when he was 27 and not once he mentions candelle. Gunko brings up her mom, but brook only talks about her father. Maybe two pages are not enough to draw conclusions, but this is different from his behavior when he was 20. Does he suspect something about candelle's mission? Does he know she is a bad influence on king leuven and pushes the world government's agenda? Did he switch to pretend hitting on other ladies to hide the fact that he stopped talking about candelle?

In this chapter candel described herself as a "devoted blade". That's the same title that shuri as gunko eventually gets by the time of the god valley incident. Given the similarities she has in design and fighting style, i really hope she's not a celestial dragons insider as the traitor plot move has been done one too many times in recent arcs.

Don't want to see it in this arc. I definitely see her having some connection to marejois as princess shuri isn't going to become a celestial dragons out of nowhere, but i hope we see something different.

Damn brook hitting the emotions for me again with another backstory within a backstory. The prince is carrying heavy davy/teach looks with his nose, chin and hair specially. I didnt expect the panty love going as far back as pre bones brook. Also didnt need the subtle death flags around brook his fate we know but it was more than likely aimed towards the prince of course.If the prince is connected to the davy clan i hope its an interesting reveal of the past to add to the mystery of the ancient era. So it’s very interesting to learn that brook was a royal guard. Excited to see that expanded upon next chapter. So crazy that almost 30 years and almost 1200 chapters later we’re still learn about some of the straw hat’s backstories.

I love that brook is getting his own expanded backstory. He's already one of my favorite straw hats so this has been a real treat. Here's to hoping another straw hat gets their lore expanded on, like robin's time between ohara and working as miss all sunday or especially zoro (although there probably isn't much to work with since he just spent his time beating up weak east blue dudes for money).

Shuri simping for brook icked me but i like how much barriers he puts. Some other manga would have let it more ambiguous. The chapter almost seems to set a commentary on this dynamic as brook also simped to a parent figure shuri and brook are really similar down the line. No wonder they get along.

For the first time since pretty much the start of elbaf, i'm back in the heart of the piece. I don't think that the breaks are too much. I think oda has been making so many macro strategic payoff story moves in the past four years that we've honestly become a bit dare i say it spoiled for content pacing post-wano, and elbaf has just been so far confusing. Think about how far the journey has come in the last decade since zou vs. The decade prior. So so much! I'm guessing this is gonna end up with shuri joining the gods knights and being forced to end her father's life. I do wonder if she went willingly or if it was similar to kuma where she only joined in order to stop the wg from hurting her family. We saw kuma and shuri in the god valley flashback which would've been before haralds 'betrayal' so she would've been added to the manmayer family for a good decade or two after the patricide incident.

World nobles really suck man, brooke didn't even believe she was forced to do all that shit until the current time around 50-60 years later!

Ragnir is just the GOAT. The fact the 800 year old supreme demon king of the world has beef with a op yet adorable squirrel hammer is peak one piece. Even imu could not melt his ice. Praise to our glorious king ragnir. Imu is so mad he used loki and luffy's name. The real fight is about to begin!

After the flashback. Only time will tell when we're able to read it without the break weeks and golden week inturrupting the pacing. But i feel like it's fine. The momentum has been built up, we've got to see imu fighting properly, but luffy is still not part of the fight yet. As soon as we get out of the flashback, luffy will be ready to join the fight to bring the momentum way higher than it was just before the flashback.
