Deadpool 3 - Fox-Marvel Legacy

In the midst of the excitement surrounding Deadpool and Wolverine's official introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, director Shawn Levy is hinting at the possibility of more X-Men characters making their appearance in the film. Discussing Marvel Studios' first-ever R-rated release, Levy mentioned that the movie will delve into the "Fox-Marvel Legacy," acknowledging the era of Marvel-based movies under 20th Century Fox and their influence on the MCU. "

Fox-Marvel Legacy

Deadpool and Wolverine are iconic Marvel characters, more specifically, iconic Marvel characters from the Fox era," the filmmaker shared in an interview with Total Film. "We won't ignore the fact that the Fox legacy exists; it played a significant role in shaping what we now recognize as the MCU. Fox also played a pivotal role in the careers of Ryan, Hugh, and mine. So, there's a rich history there, and Marvel's history at Fox is certainly a part of our storytelling." While Jennifer Garner's Elektra has been confirmed, speculations for Deadpool 3 include the possibility of characters from the upcoming Fantastic Four film and Channing Tatum portraying Gambit. Deadpool 3 is now officially slated for release on September 6, 2024.

Red Notice Movie Review

You can’t argue with the muscular marquee value of headlining Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot in a slick, fast-paced action thriller laced with playful comedy, even if it’s an empty-calorie entertainment like Red Notice. Like many Netflix star vehicles, writer-director Rawson Marshall Thurber’s busy crime caper has more glossy industrial sheen than unique personality. But it’s diverting enough to justify the sequel so clearly set up in its final scenes, even if it’s unlikely to linger in the minds of many viewers beyond the end credits. Mostly, the derivative adventure keeps you occupied checking off the many films from which it borrows. It starts well enough with an engaging opening that sets up the MacGuffins of the film, which are the three ornate eggs that Mark Antony supposedly gifted to Cleopatra on their wedding day. Two were recovered, with one in a museum in Rome and the other in the private collection of a wealthy arms dealer, while the third exists only in rumor. The Rome-based egg is targeted for thievery on the black market, which spurs FBI special profiler and art specialist John Hartley (Johnson) and Interpol Inspector Das (Ritu Arya) to confirm that it’s still secure. It is not, because famed art thief Nolan Booth (Reynolds) has already absconded with the priceless piece, creating the first of many, many chases involving the two men trying to outmaneuver one another physically, mentally, or, in Reynolds’ case, with an arsenal of “dad joke”-level quips. The other player in this quest is Gadot’s Sarah Black, a slinky art thief who considers herself the greatest in the world, and makes it her life’s work to be just one step ahead of both Hartley and Booth as she’s pursuing the eggs for a buyer willing to pay $300 million for their collection and delivery.

Red Notice starts with a lot of energetic potential but then devolves into a pastiche of other, better films, cribbing scenes that feel like they were lifted straight from a myriad of films from Indiana Jones to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Of the three mega-star leads, Dwayne Johnson acquits himself the best to committing to his FBI profiler as more of a brainy hero rather than just brawn, and it works. Reynolds exists as a quip machine who gets tiresome quick, while Gadot feels like she’s barely in it. While this may be positioned as a new franchise, there’s nothing here that sets up any urgency or excitement to go on more adventures with this trio.
In the first act, Thurber teases with a breezy and well-choreographed museum escape that he’s going to subvert the big, loud set pieces expected in these kinds of films with something different, and then he doesn’t deliver. As the players jump from Rome to Bali to London to Valencia and finally, Argentina, playing find the eggs, the less each scenario feels original or fresh. Several action sequences are framed like first-person video games with the camera inside cars during chases, or handheld during fistfights to put us inside the action, but it’s far from innovative or exhilarating. It just feels like gimmicky video game cut scenes that aren’t anything new to the choreography, framing, or even fun of the fights. There’s also the issue of the audience ever buying that Reynolds is going to hold his own longer than a full-blown punch or two with Johnson in a fist fight. Then Gadot is added to the melee, easily holding her own, or just plain besting both of them. While I appreciate that Gadot’s Black at least gets to take her heels off for major fights, none of these people are superheroes, which means the only one brawling with any cred is Johnson, so there’s a lot of suspension of disbelief required.

And that’s carried through to Reynolds’ Booth, who is a test to the nerves with his constant, terrible running commentary of comebacks and snarkery about everything. Yes, it’s Reynolds’ signature schtick, but in Red Notice, he operates like an obnoxious talking doll with a broken pull string. In yet another suspension of disbelief, it’s unbelievable that neither Gadot or Johnson’s characters wouldn’t gag him with a sock by the second act, especially when Booth gets weirdly emotional with Hartley. Who needs bro bonding in a heist, relic, caper? Thurber makes a lot of other odd choices in the film, like not letting Chris Diamantopoulos go full weird with his short-man-syndrome arms dealer, Sotto Voce (yes, that’s the character’s name.) Instead, he’s allowed to rasp his lines like he’s in dire need of a lozenge, but never ends up taking the space an intentional bad guy should have in a movie like this. In fact, there’s no real antagonist of note to hang the stakes of the film on at all, and that’s because Thurber is more interested in maintaining the moral liquidity of all the characters so you’re left guessing about their true intentions instead of feeling any sense of danger at any point. It’s just an endless race from museums to Russian prisons to bullfighting rings and jungles, which all blur together without giving anything time to breathe, as we wait for someone to double-cross someone because that’s all the whole movie keeps giving us.

Plus, by the second and third act, every set piece feels derivative from another movie. Ocean’s 11, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, National Treasure, The Mummy, and even Mr. and Mrs. Smith could all rightfully accuse Red Notice of stealing their scenes. What makes it even worse is the fact that this cast is up to doing something truly different. Gadot, when she appears, plays Black like she’s having a lot of fun. Reynolds is more than capable of not coming across like a human blooper reel, but that’s all he’s asked to do here. And Johnson does his best to bring a competent hotness to Hartley so he’s not just the muscle, which makes him the MVP here. But the dialogue and strange, forced bromance that Booth demands of Hartley, even if it’s a joke, is tiring and not as engaging as the filmmakers think it is. Red Notice really needed a script with a much lighter touch all around. It should have been sexier and smarter, with less action, and more original storytelling. Instead, it’s a mindless diversion that’s blandly familiar, yet thinks it’s far cleverer than it really is.

Deadpool 3 Movie Plot And Updates

We're still waiting on an official release date for the third movie, but we do now know that long-time Bob's Burgers writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin have been hired to write the threequel. According to Deadline, the pair were hired after Reynolds met with writers to hear their pitches, both he and the studio felt the sisters' take was the "perfect fit". Even though there are writers now, the third movie remains in early development, so we can't expect to see it any time soon. "It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We've got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make," Feige told Collider. That means a 2022 production start at the earliest.

That hasn't stopped Reynolds from teasing us all with tantalising photos, of course. Depending on when it starts filming in 2022, there's a chance we could see it in 2023. Marvel already has two movies confirmed for that year (Ant-Man 3 and Guardians 3), but there are still two dates free: July 28 and November 3. Once a more specific filming start date has been confirmed, we should have a better idea of when the Merc with a Mouth will return. If there's one certainty in life, it's that Ryan Reynolds will reprise the role of Wade Wilson for Deadpool 3. Nobody else has confirmed their involvement yet, so we'll have to wait and see who's joining Reynolds. Deadpool 2 introduced us to a range of new heroes too with the X-Force team and although some didn't survive long enough, we could see the likes of Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz) again. However, Beetz isn't so sure she'll be back as she revealed in March 2021 that she hadn't heard anything about a role: "I would love to revive the role... I haven't had any specific conversations around it. But I'm interested." Fellow teammates Colossus (Stefan Kapičić), Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), Yukio (Shioli Kutsuna) and Russell (Julian Dennison) will probably round out the X-Force team if we see them again, perhaps with Peter (Rob Delaney) in tow. Fans shouldn't hold out much hope to see the likes of Shatterstar (Lewis Tan) and Zeitgeist (Bill Skarsgård) return for Deadpool 3, but superheroes always cheat death in the comics, so never say never. One character who already cheated death (as long as Deadpool 2's post-credits sequence is canon) in the franchise is Vanessa, Deadpool's girlfriend, and it's safe to assume that she'll return for the sequel too. Baccarin defended Vanessa's lack of screen time in the sequel with fans accusing the movie of 'fridging' her. "I can understand that people felt that way and I certainly was disappointed that I didn't have more to do, because I just loved the part so much," she said. "But in watching the film and reading the script, it felt like such an emotionally pivotal role in the film and the entire arc of his character in the film is set into motion because of what happens to my character." The Merc with a Mouth might have his hands full fighting to protect her though, as previous Easter eggs have hinted that Mr Sinister could turn out to be the big bad of Deadpool 3. Failing that, Deadpool 2's cut cameo from the likes of Omega Red during the Ice Box Prison scene could also hint at the future of the franchise. TJ Miller played Weasel in the first two movies, but has said he'd "rather they didn't" make a third movie and if that means he won't be back, we won't be too bothered by it. Will we finally see an on-screen reunion for Ryan Reynolds and his nemesis Hugh Jackman? We simply don't know. Reynolds has teased that the threequel is "looking to go in a completely different direction", teasingly adding: "Often, they reboot or change a character maybe like four movies too late." We don't know if this is the same idea that the Molyneux sisters will be taking for their take on Deadpool, but they already have to deal with potentially fitting Deadpool in the MCU, so it'll feel different already. Though Deadpool's original director said the threequel didn't need an R rating to be great, the movie will be rated R, so don't worry about that. Feige confirmed in February 2021 that since Deadpool has "established" itself as an R-rated franchise, "we already said we would not mess with [the rating]". It's unclear how the movie's MCU connection will play a part in the continuity of the series from the first two movies or if it'll effectively be a soft reboot. Does this mean that time travel will play a more prominent role in Deadpool 3? The last time we saw Negasonic Teenage Warhead, she was fixing Cable's time machine so Deadpool could right the wrongs of the past, including a regrettable yet hilarious career choice made by Ryan Reynolds. Deadpool 3 could also prove fruitful if Marvel wants to introduce other former Fox characters. Wernick suggested to Den of Geek that the future of Deadpool could be crossover-heavy. "There's a lot to be sorted out, like how Deadpool fits into the Marvel Universe with the other characters and into the release schedule of the MCU. Then it's, do the X-Men get in there at some point? Fantastic Four? There's a lot to be sorted out." Leitch said: "You can put [Deadpool] in with any one of those characters, or an ensemble of those characters, and it just sort of magnifies what you're doing. So that's probably one aspect that they are entertaining, and hopefully, they are entertaining more ideas as well." But, as we said, Leitch hasn't been in touch with Disney so this is pure speculation on his – and our – part. For what it's worth, Deadpool has joined the MCU... sort of. He has also said he wants to explore Deadpool's pansexuality in the future: "I certainly think that this universe... needs to represent and reflect the world in very real ways."
