Everything You Need to Know About the War of the Elves and Sauron in ‘The Rings of Power’ Season 3

The epic saga of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is charging into its third season, and Middle-earth is about to face seismic shifts. With the renewal confirmed, the story leaps forward several years to spotlight the War of the Elves and Sauron—brought to life by Charlie Vickers’ chilling portrayal of the Dark Lord. This clash promises to reshape the Second Age, but where does it fit in Tolkien’s vast timeline, and how will it differ from what we’ve seen before? Let’s break it all down.

Understanding the War’s Place in the Second Age

For fans of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films, Middle-earth’s timeline can feel like a labyrinth—especially when The Rings of Power dives into lesser-known corners of the Second Age. Getting this war’s context right is key to appreciating its stakes, so let’s clear up any confusion.

Everything You Need to Know About the War of the Elves and Sauron in ‘The Rings of Power’ Season 3

This Isn’t the War from The Fellowship of the Ring

That iconic prologue in The Fellowship of the Ring—where Elves and Men unite against Sauron at Mount Doom—is unforgettable. It’s the War of the Last Alliance, a titanic showdown at the end of the Second Age (years 3429–3441) that sees Sauron defeated and the One Ring lost. It’s a defining moment that echoes into the Third Age. But if you’re expecting The Rings of Power Season 3 to revisit that battle, think again.

The War of the Elves and Sauron is a different beast entirely. Fought much earlier, between 1693 and 1701 of the Second Age, it kicks off with the Sack of Eregion—a brutal event we glimpsed in Season 2. This war sets the stage for Middle-earth’s power struggles, long before the Last Alliance takes shape.
The War’s Origins: Rings, Deception, and Destruction

So, how does this war ignite? It’s all tied to Sauron’s master plan and the Rings of Power.

Sauron’s Betrayal and the Sack of Eregion

In Tolkien’s lore, Sauron—disguised as Annatar, a supposed emissary of the Valar—dupes Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) into forging the Nine Rings for Men and the Seven for Dwarves. The Elves, wary of his influence, craft the Three Elven Rings in secret. Meanwhile, Sauron forges the One Ring in Mordor, a move that backfires when the Elves sense his treachery the moment he wears it. Furious, Sauron invades Eriador, targeting Eregion to reclaim the rings he believes are stashed there.

Season 2 showed the Sack of Eregion, though with tweaks from the books. Sauron captures and tortures Celebrimbor, who spills the locations of the Nine and Seven but keeps the Three’s hiding spots—sent to Lindon with Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker), Círdan (Ben Daniels), and Galadriel (Morfydd Clark)—a secret. Eregion falls, and Elrond (Robert Aramayo) fails to hold the line, saved only by the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm.

Middle-earth Transformed

The war’s fallout is massive. Elrond retreats and founds Rivendell as a sanctuary, while Gil-galad holds Lindon. Sauron’s Orcs ravage Eriador, isolating these Elven strongholds. The tide turns in 1700 when Númenor, led by King Tar-Minastir, sends a mighty army to crush Sauron’s forces. By 1701, Sauron limps back to Mordor, defeated—for now.
This victory cements Númenor’s dominance, but their pride sows the seeds of doom. Years later, convinced they can challenge the Valar, the Númenóreans invade Valinor. The result? Their island sinks, and only a handful of survivors escape to found Arnor and Gondor. The War of the Elves and Sauron, then, is a pivot point—ushering in both triumph and tragedy.

How The Rings of Power Will Rewrite the War

Tolkien’s version plants this war squarely in the mid-Second Age, but The Rings of Power is shaking things up—timeline and all.

A Compressed Timeline and Númenor’s Role

In the series, Númenor’s last king, Ar-Pharazôn (Trystan Gravelle), is already on the throne, and tensions with the Elves are simmering. He resents the Valar’s favoritism toward the Elves, hinting at an earlier invasion of Valinor. This scrambles the war’s timeline—especially since Tolkien has Sauron forging the One Ring before the Sack of Eregion, while Season 3 seems poised to show its creation after.

How will Númenor fit in? One possibility: Ar-Pharazôn sees the war as a chance to flex Númenor’s might, saving the Elves to boost his prestige before turning his sights on Valinor. Another twist could tie the Nine Rings to Númenor’s fate—perhaps a deal with Sauron sets the stage for their downfall.

Creative Liberties and Fresh Stakes

The Rings of Power thrives on filling Tolkien’s gaps, crafting a Middle-earth that’s familiar yet distinct. Season 3’s war might not match the books beat-for-beat, but that’s part of its charm. By weaving disparate threads—Sauron’s rise, Númenor’s hubris, and the Elves’ defiance—into a cohesive tale, the show keeps us guessing. It’s a bold reimagining, and so far, that unpredictability has been its strength.

Catch Up Before Season 3

Both seasons of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power are streaming on Prime Video, so now’s the time to revisit Middle-earth’s Second Age. The War of the Elves and Sauron is coming—and with it, a Middle-earth forever changed. What twists do you think Season 3 will bring? Let’s hear your predictions!

Watch HBO Max's First Trailer for Titans Season Three

Have no fear, the #Titans Season 3 teaser is here. Stream Season 3 of Titans beginning August 12, only on HBO Max: http://itsh.bo/hbo-max This gritty take on the Teen Titans franchise follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find where they belong. In season three, circumstances draw our heroes to Gotham City, where they will reunite with old friends and face new threats. The first three episodes of season three will premiere on Thursday, August 12 with subsequent episodes launching weekly every Thursday through October 21. HBO Max has dropped a teaser trailer for the upcoming third season of Titans that would appear to echo one of DC’s most controversial storylines. The teaser sees the Titans arrive in Gotham City and immediately signals the presence of The Joker, something that doesn’t bode well for Jason Todd (Curran Walters) if this a retelling of Batman’s A Death in the Family, which a lingering close-up of a bloodied crowbar suggests it might be.

Todd, having moved on from Robin in the previous season, instead adopts the Red Hood persona in Season Three. Batman: A Death in the Family is a four-book run from 1988. Todd’s character was killed off for good following a 36-hour telephone poll staged by DC, which gave readers the opportunity to save his life. Instead they voted for his death, allowing The Joker to beat him to death with a crowbar.

Also reappearing are Brenton Thwaites as Nightwing, Ryan Potter as Gar, Joshua Orpin as Conner, Anna Diop as Starfire, Alan Ritchson as Hawk, Minka Kelly as Dove, Damaris Lewis as Blackfire, Iain Glen as Bruce Wayne and the briefest glimpse of what looks to be Vincent Kartheiser’s confirmed turn as Scarecrow. Jay Lycurgo also joins the cast as Tim Drake, the third person to become Robin, along with Savannah Welch as Barbara Gordon. While there’s no sign of the demonic Raven in the 55 second teaser trailer, on-set images of Teagan Croft in character have emerged, so her appearance is guaranteed. Titans Season Three premieres on HBO Max on August 12.

OreGairu Season 3 Release Date & Everything You Need to Know

‘My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU’ or more popularly known as OreGairu is adored by many of the anime fans. Known for its nuanced storytelling and the way it handles teenage romance and the bitter realities, the show will literally swoon you off your feet.

The anime has been well-received by the fans since its initial release, and season 2 saw the same reaction. Since then, fans have been waiting for the third part of My Teen Romantic Comedy, SNAFU. However, it has been delayed due to COVID.

Delay & New Release Date

It is all thanks to the ongoing pandemic Covid-19 that this show also got postponed. It was supposed to release on the 10th of April only.

Theory Section

In the theory section, I will discuss various facts of the show like about the studio, what’s my take on the show, it is famous or not and about the mangaka himself too.

Basically, every technicality that accelerates/hinders the production of ‘OreGairu S3’.

About the Studio

Fans would be overjoyed to know that Studio Feel is returning for the final season. The first season was animated by Studio Brains.

Still, there was a shift in the studio in the second season where Studio Feel took over. There were some noticeable changes in the character design, but it was for good, and we all liked it.

About the Show

In my opinion, Oregairu is possibly the best high school rom-com drama out there. The show revolves around three characters who all have these contradicting perspectives and notions on life and people.

It dives into the psyche of all these characters and makes us understand their individual struggles. But what makes the show best is the witty and canny dialogues and the way it handles all of that.

Needless to say, but the truth must be spoken, Oregairu is for a very niche community. In this community, people admire characters for the way they are.

What makes it accessible?

Oregairu is critically acclaimed by many people because of the ideologies of Hachiman only. His take on the bittersweet life and how he perceives people is what makes the show much more intriguing and intricate than it already is.

Another thing about the anime is that it has a well-defined end goal, the creator knows where he is heading with the characters. Plus, it runs on several different smaller arcs, all at once, thus creating a comprehensive and an all-embracing story for its audience.

About the Mangaka

The creator of Oregairu is Wataru Watari. His other work is ‘Girlish Number,’ which is quite good.

Still, the very definition of brilliance lies in his other creation ‘Oregairu.’ Backed up by Ponkan8, the illustrator, the light novel series, rose to popularity in no time. They both completed the novel back in 2019, with a total of 14 volumes.

Production Update

The anime was to be broadcasted in April 2020, so one can easily make out that the production is all complete, and it was just because of the coronavirus outbreak, which led to its delay.

Key Visual

A key visual was released for the new season, and various fans of the show pointed out that Studio Feel was behind the animation as it resembled the character designs from the second season.

Expected Storyline

This is the last season of Oregairu, and I seriously don’t know how I will live without this show. Putting my emotions aside, let’s focus on the storyline of the third season —

It will continue after the huge cliffhanger we all got to see in the last season. The people of the volunteer club will face the problem of the High School Prom.

Although the prom is just another contrivance to all the questions that we face in our lives, just a heads up. This season, the characters will find their resolve to move forward in their lives and to speak up for themselves.

Recap of Season 1-2

Hikigaya Hachiman, the narcissistic protagonist with a very interesting set of ideas and notions towards life and society, is compelled to join the volunteer club by his teacher. And there, his life suddenly begins to change.

Both the seasons follow him and his friends on a journey of fun and self-discovery where they all develop to better human beings. The entire series makes you feel more and more connected with the characters with the passing of every episode.

Bound with Slice of Life and rom-com, this anime will undoubtedly find your way among your favorites, only if you are patient enough.

Cast and Staff

There is no change in the cast and staff.

  • Director – Kei Oikawa
  • Series Composition – Shoutarou Suga
  • Character Design – Yuuichi Tanaka
  • Takuya Eguchi as Hachiman Hikigaya
  • Saori Hayami as Yukino Yukinoshita
  • Nao Toyama as Yui Yuigahama
  • Ayane Sakura as Iroha Isshiki

About OreGairu

Written by Wataru Watari and Illustrated by Ponkan8, this story was adapted into a manga thrice. It was picked up for an animated adaptation by Brain’s Base. Still, it was animated by Feel Studio in its second season.

This anime is of the slice of life genre featuring the story of the pragmatic highschooler Hachiman Hikigaya. He is forced to be a part of a Service Club by his teacher alongside Yukino Yukinoshita and Yui Yuigahama. Despite having wildly different personalities and beliefs, they offer help to those in need.
