If Raya and the Last Dragon proves anything, it’s that Disney is trying to tell a more modern “Disney Princess” story with their latest animated effort. Commercially, Disney’s transition into the 21st century has been a smooth one. While the shuttering of Disney theme parks in the last year due to the pandemic has cost the billions-dollar conglomerate money, Disney has many, many revenue streams, and the Disney brand remains strong. And much of that brand still relies on the studio’s signature Disney Princess movies, which have not had as seamless a narrative transition into modern storytelling as many fans might have hoped. Rigidly faithful live-action adaptations of the animated classics that millennials grew up with are now recognized for their narrow romantic messaging, and the often racist, colonialist world-building that’s used to prop up this type of storytelling.

Meanwhile Walt Disney Animation Studios has attempted to complicate and modernize the Disney Princess template in interesting ways, but they’ve never quite nailed it narratively. Frozen was a step in the right direction with its emphasis on sisterly love, but it couldn’t resist shoehorning a thematically superfluous romance into its plot with the Kristoff character. Dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity, but fear and paranoia tore Kumandra apart into five distinct lands, each named after a different part of the dragon: Heart, Tail, Spine, Talon, and Fang. Raya lives in Heart, where her family has tasked itself with guarding the Dragon Gem, the MacGuffin that the last dragon used to save the world a half-millennia prior. When the Dragon Gem is broken and the Druun return, Raya sets out to find the mythical last dragon, Sisu, and to fix the world. We are told that this story takes place long ago, but Raya’s vibrant world is already well-lived in when we come to it. The societies of Kumandra are different from both the European castles of Beauty and the Beast or Frozen, and the more rural aesthetic of Pocahontas or Moana. Pushing back against the false binary of the “civilized” city and the indigenous wilderness of other Disney Princess movies, the world of Raya is both urban and organic. The filmmakers traveled throughout Southeast Asia to do research for the film, and it shows. Visually, Raya’s Heart homeland looks like Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, a vestige of the mighty Khmer empire. A trip to Talon reveals a merchant town seemingly in perpetual night market mode. It’s a Disney-fied version of the Banana Pancake Trail more than a specific cultural vision, but that doesn’t totally undercut the excitement the fresh Disney Princess setting infuses into its narrative. The world of Raya and the Last Dragon is both teeming and accessible at the same time, suggestive of a richness and depth that welcomes rather than intimidates. It is more reminiscent of Avatar: The Last Airbender than anything Disney has done before. To be clear, like Avatar before it, Raya and the Last Dragon is still very much an American story. While the setting may be a fictionalized world inspired by Southeast Asian cultures, Raya‘s premise is classic Hollywood: Raya suffers a familial tragedy and then must set out on her own quest to save the world. Raya brings that storytelling structure into the 21st century by eschewing the traditional trappings of romance or personal glory (which can be done in modern, interesting ways, but, given the redundancy of those stories needs to be worked harder toward), and leaning into themes of healing, forgiveness, and community. The biggest stakes here aren’t about securing a love or marriage which, at least in Western media, has inextricable ties to the consolidation of privilege and power but rather the (figurative) soul of humanity. While Raya is, broadly speaking, a princess (her father Chief Benja is the leader of Kumandra’s Heart land), Raya’s quest to collect all of the pieces of the Dragon Gem is explicitly depicted to be about a fair redistribution of power and resources. The Druun are simple monsters, yes, but they are also effective stand-ins for the much more intangible forces that threaten our present and future: namely climate change and the devastating conflict that arises from the instability it creates. In Raya, our heroine’s mission is never about regaining or consolidating power. It’s about healing a community and, with it, the natural world two necessary pieces of the same solution. Raya and the Last Dragon has a diverse team behind its story. Written by Vietnamese-American playwright Qui Nguyen (Dispatches From Elsewhere, The Society) and Malaysian-born American Adele Lim (Crazy Rich Asians), the movie was co-directed by American filmmaker (and Moana co-director) Don Hall and by Mexican-American filmmaker Carlos López Estrada (Blindspotting). FIFA 21: Release Date, Free Upgrades, and Everything Else We Know So Far

Yesterday during EA Play 2020, Electronic Arts revealed FIFA 21 for the first time. Alongside the reveal trailer, EA also revealed the game's release date, a new feature called "dual entitlement," pre-order bonuses, various special editions, and much more. Unfortunately, EA hasn't revealed any gameplay, and details on various modes like Ultimate Team and Career Mode still haven't been disclosed.

Release Date:

FIFA 21 is scheduled to release worldwide on October 9 via the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch. It's also coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X this year, but it's unclear when these next-gen versions will drop.

Crash Bandicoot 4 Reveal Date Leaked

The latest development in leaks and rumors pertaining to the new Crash Bandicoot game may have just given us a date to expect an official reveal of the rumored Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time. That reveal is supposedly set to happen on June 22nd, according to analyst Daniel Ahmad who said the reveal was and still is supposed to take place as part of the Summer Game Fest announcements. The latest on the game follows a leak from this week that revealed the game’s title and artwork after it was rated on a Taiwanese site for games’ age ratings.

Ahmad tweeted about the game after the rating was already spotted online. The analyst said June 22nd is when we can expect to see the game’s reveal and said that just as the ratings for the game suggested, there’s no Nintendo Switch version planned.

Geoff Keighley, the organizer of the Summer Game Fest events, tweeted on Friday about a new game announcement planned for June 22nd that’ll also feature gameplay. There was no mention of Crash Bandicoot, so it could very well be a different game entirely, but it lines up nicely with what’s already expected from the rumors so far.

Crash’s return in a new game is something people have been requesting for some time now considering how popular the N. Sane Trilogy and other retro returns like the Spyro games have been. Some merchandise leaks spotted not long ago indicated that a new game might be in the works, but that was all Crash Bandicoot hopefuls had to go off of until now. Much more official teasers surfaced recently with press members and content creators getting puzzles that directly referenced Crash Bandicoot. All those teasers culminated in what we know now, that there’s definitely a game out that that’s been rated and that we’ll supposedly see it revealed soon.

This reveal on Monday will share the day with another event planned by Nintendo. The next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character, the one from ARMS, will be revealed on the same day. Smash’s will come first with the Summer Game Fest announcement happening immediately afterwards, so people will have time to tune into the first and head into the next right away.

However, what’s interesting in this particular leak is that it does not seem to correspond with the other AirPods leaks that came out in previous months. It should be noted that Prosser did not specify whether this means there will be a third AirPods model slated for release in 2020. May 2020 releases

There will also be a number of confirmed games that will be arriving at the console. For instance, the 80s themed “Huntdown” and the aerial combat scrolling shooter “Jet Lancer” will be launched on Switch on May 12.

There will be three games arriving on May 13. These are the first-person adventure game “Island Saver,” the “She Sees Red - Interactive Movie,” and the baseball simulator “Super Mega Baseball 3”

May 14th will be a lot busier as ten titles will be arriving at the Switch. These are “Satazius Next,” “Armed 7 DX,” “Wolflame,” “Carnage: Battle Arena,” “TT Isle of Man Ride on the Edge 2,” “Cooking Simulator,” “Kholat,” “Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee,” “Ion Fury,” and “Zenge.”

Meanwhile, six games will arrive at the Nintendo Switch console on May 15. These are “Emma: Lost in Memories,” “Thy Sword,” “The Eternal Castle” remastered, “Dungeon of the Endless,” “Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix,” “Kakuro Magic.”

Extraction 2: Sequel to Netflix Action Flick Announced

According to variety, Joe Russo, who produced Extraction along with his brother, Anthony, has been tapped for the sequel as a writer.
