Sony’s Horizon Zero Dawn Live-Action Movie Set for 2027 Release — What Fans Can Expect

Sony has officially confirmed that its critically acclaimed game Horizon Zero Dawn is being adapted into a live-action film, slated for a 2027 release. This marks another bold step for PlayStation Productions as it continues expanding its footprint in Hollywood following hits like The Last of Us and Uncharted. Fans have long speculated about this adaptation, and now it’s finally becoming reality Aloy’s breathtaking world is heading to the big screen.

Background of Horizon Zero Dawn

Developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Horizon Zero Dawn debuted in 2017 and became an instant classic. The game sold millions of copies worldwide, praised for its deep lore, unique combat system, and stunning open-world visuals.

Set in a post-apocalyptic Earth where nature has reclaimed the ruins of a fallen civilization, the story follows Aloy, a fierce hunter navigating a world ruled by mechanical creatures. The mix of tribal culture and futuristic technology made it one of PlayStation’s most original and beloved franchises.

The Live-Action Adaptation

Sony’s announcement revealed that the Horizon Zero Dawn movie will release in 2027, with production led by PlayStation Productions in partnership with Netflix. Filming is expected to begin in 2026. The adaptation aims to bring Aloy’s story to a broader audience while staying true to the source material that made the game a masterpiece.

Sony’s Horizon Zero Dawn Live-Action Movie Set for 2027 Release — What Fans Can Expect

The Creative Team

While Sony has yet to reveal the full cast, early reports suggest that Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, will serve as executive producer. The film is rumored to be directed by Michelle MacLaren, known for Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad, giving fans hope for a visually epic and character-driven story.

The writing team is reportedly developing a screenplay that closely follows Aloy’s origins while introducing cinematic elements to deepen emotional impact.

Storyline Expectations

Fans can expect the movie to explore Aloy’s journey from an outcast to a hero uncovering the secrets of her world’s past. The story will likely delve into the mystery behind the ancient machines, the fall of old humanity, and Aloy’s connection to Project Zero Dawn.

The balance between sci-fi wonder and tribal realism will be key ensuring the world feels both familiar and alien, just as in the game.

The World of Horizon

The visual world of Horizon Zero Dawn is one of its biggest strengths, and the film must capture that essence. Expect sweeping landscapes, towering robotic creatures, and lush wilderness scenes that contrast with remnants of lost technology.

Production rumors suggest filming may take place in New Zealand and Canada, offering vast natural backdrops perfect for the story’s mix of ancient and futuristic worlds. Cutting-edge CGI will be used to bring Aloy’s robotic adversaries like the Thunderjaw and Stormbird to life.

Casting Speculations

One of the hottest topics among fans is who will play Aloy. Names like Alycia Debnam-Carey, Sophie Turner, and even Sadie Sink have been floated by fans. While Sony has not confirmed casting, whoever takes on the role must embody Aloy’s fierce independence and emotional depth.

Supporting roles such as Rost, Sylens, and HADES are also expected to play key parts in the film’s storyline.

Comparison with Other PlayStation Adaptations

Following the success of The Last of Us HBO series, PlayStation Productions has proven it can translate games into compelling screen narratives. Horizon Zero Dawn is a natural next step offering cinematic potential through its vast lore, emotional arcs, and breathtaking world-building.

Unlike Uncharted, which leaned toward adventure-comedy, Horizon promises a more serious, emotional, and visually stunning journey.

Themes That Will Define the Movie

At its heart, Horizon Zero Dawn is about humanity’s resilience, environmental renewal, and the dangers of technology unchecked. Aloy’s personal growth mirrors the world’s struggle to reclaim balance. These universal themes ensure the movie will resonate beyond gaming circles.

The Appeal to Both Gamers and New Audiences

Sony aims to make the film accessible even for those unfamiliar with the game. By focusing on character-driven storytelling, newcomers will be drawn in by Aloy’s courage and the world’s mysteries, while longtime fans will appreciate the faithful recreation of key moments and designs.

Release Date and Distribution

Sony has confirmed a 2027 release window, though the exact date remains under wraps. The film will likely receive a dual release both theatrically and on Netflix  maximizing global reach and accessibility.

Conclusion

The upcoming Horizon Zero Dawn movie has the potential to set a new benchmark for video game adaptations. With a rich story, complex characters, and a visionary production team, this 2027 release could become a defining moment in PlayStation’s cinematic journey. Fans of Aloy’s world can finally look forward to seeing their hero brought to life like never before.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Release Dates

Adding to the love for the game, Sony and Insomniac Games have announced that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will receive an update next year. According to the release, the PlayStation 5 exclusive is set to get a free update incorporating highly requested features.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2

The announcement mentions that the substantial update is still undergoing "more testing" to ensure it meets quality standards. Insomniac Games highlighted that a variety of features are on the way, and although there's no confirmation yet, a comprehensive list of additions will be revealed closer to the update's release. Among the expected additions, in addition to the "New Game+" feature, are options like the ability to change the time of day, replay specific missions, and customize visuals with various suits and forms. Insomniac expressed their excitement, stating, "We can’t wait to share more with you in the future. In the meantime, we appreciate your patience as our team works to finish our next update for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2!"

Marvel’s Spider-man 2 Guides And Release Dates

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 once again underscores PlayStation's prowess in delivering top-tier narrative titles. The stunning visuals and exceptional gameplay in the latest web-slinging adventure of Spidey have left PS5 owners thoroughly impressed, while PC gamers eagerly ponder when, or even if, they'll have the chance to share in this excitement.

Marvel’s Spider-man 2 gameplay

At present, there's been no official word from Insomniac regarding the potential arrival of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PC, making it a PS5 exclusive for the time being. This may be disappointing news for those without a PS5. However, considering that the first game and its Miles Morales spin-off eventually made their way to the PC platform, it's likely that the second installment will follow suit. Let's delve into the specifics of when this could happen and what we can anticipate.

Will Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Be Released on PC?

Yes, there will be a PC port for Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Nevertheless, it's likely to be some time before that materializes.

Several PlayStation exclusives have gradually found their way to the PC platform, including titles like God of War (2018), Returnal, and Horizon Zero Dawn, to name a few. The initial Marvel's Spider-Man reached PC almost four years after its PS4 debut, while Miles Morales took just two years. Given this trend, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will inevitably join the ranks of PC-accessible titles, and the wait is expected to be shorter than its predecessor.

Insomniac Hints at a Venom Game After Marvel's Spider-Man 2 When Can We Expect Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC?

The release date for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PC remains uncertain. Officially, there are no current plans to bring the game to PC, and it's exclusively playable on the PS5 for now.

One speculative estimation is that PlayStation might announce the PC version of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 as Insomniac's Wolverine project nears completion. This strategic move could not only yield strong sales but also generate significant excitement for Wolverine, potentially motivating players to consider acquiring a PS5 Pro console, which is expected to be released around the same time.

Nonetheless, anticipation is also high for the forthcoming God of War: Ragnarok PC port. Given the release schedules of these two games, it appears that Ragnarok would need to debut on PC before Peter and Miles can make their web-swinging debut on the platform. In any case, this approximation points to an early 2025 or later release date for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PC. The wait may be lengthy, but in the interim, you can explore our other Marvel's Spider-Man 2 guides.

Sony Reveals Tekken 8 Release Dates

A new installment of the longrunning Tekken franchise is in the works at Bandai Namco. The news of Tekken 8 was unveiled during Sony’s State of Play showcase on Tuesday. The fighting video game series largely centers on the King of Iron Fist Tournament, in which players control competitors as they battle it out to win the major title. The last iteration, Tekken 7, arrived in 2015 and chronicled the events leading up to the ultimate fight between boss martial artist Heihachi Mishima and his son, Kazuya Mishima.
Tekken 7 was released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Seven years later, the forthcoming Tekken 8 will debut on the latest generation of consoles, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, as well as PC via Steam.
Sony’s trailer for Tekken 8 teases Mishima’s return, battling it out against his own son, Jin Kazama. The 3D animated video offers little in terms of storyline but gives a glimpse at the heated fist fight, which takes place in a fiery volcanic landscape. Gran Turismo Movie Plot Revealed

Announced alongside Horizon and God of War TV shows coming to streaming platforms, the Hollywood adaptation of Gran Turismo now has a plot. Building on the popularity of the racing simulation video game series from Polyphony Digital, the upcoming movie will focus on the competitive element of Gran Turismo.

Reports note that the film is “Based on a true story, the film is the ultimate wish-fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver.” The brief plot note is believed to be inspired by Lucas Ordóñez, who was the inaugural winner of the GT Academy, an international virtual-to-reality competition by Nissan, Sony PlayStation and Polyphony Digital. Ordóñez went on to reach the podium with Nissan in the European GT4 Cup campaign, score two victories and finish the season as a runner-up in the championship. The Gran Turismo film currently in early development from Sony PlayStation Productions will be directed by District 9 and Elysium’s Neill Blomkamp. Look for the Hollywood adaptation to be released August 11, 2023.

Sony Offers an Update on Spider-Man 4 and Spinoffs

Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman recently spoke with Deadline, giving fans an update on what to expect next from the Spider-Man and Spider-Verse franchise. Rothman spoke about Spider-Man’s place in Sony’s various franchises stating, “Uncharted, Jumanji, Spider-Man. We have our Marvel business, which breaks into three tranches.” He reveals that Sony is “currently at work on two Spider-Verse sequels to our Oscar-winning animated movie, with Lord and Miller.” Besides plans for growing the animation franchise, Rothman also revealed that he hopes to continue the Spider-Man franchise for a fourth installment.

The Sony executive said, “We hope to get working on the next Spider-Man movie.” Rothman is referring to the next MCU Spider-Man film helmed by Sony and Marvel Studios together. When asked if the fourth film will see the return of director Jon Watts and mainstay stars like Tom Holland and Zendaya, Rothman responds, “That whole group, we hope.” Watts, Holland and Zendaya have worked with one another for all three films so far. Sony and Marvel have yet to officially confirm the fourth Spider-Man film, however, Kevin Feige has once stated that Spidey’s future is still being mapped out. At any rate, while Sony and Marvel have yet to officially green-light a fourth Spider-Man solo film, Marvel boss Kevin Feige and Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal previously stated that they are mapping out Spidey's future within the MCU. "Amy and I and Disney and Sony are talking about yes, we're actively beginning to develop where the story heads next, which I only say outright because I don't want fans to go through any separation trauma like what happened after [Spider-Man:] Far From Home," Feige said. "That will not be occurring this time." Going back to the Deadline interview, Rothman also discussed the Sony projects he describes as being "adjunct to the Spider-Man universe," namely the upcoming live-action spinoff films Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web. "That's Kraven, which we’re shooting now, and Madame Web, which we’ll start in the spring with S.J. Clarkson directing," he said. "And then there are many Marvel characters that are standalone." Rothman's comments confirm that cameras are still rolling on Kraven after the film began shooting earlier this year. They also suggest that Madame Web will itself enter production very soon, as spring is nearing its end and the film is currently slated for a summer 2023 release.

Morbius Movie Reviews

It’s true: movies are magic. It’s just that people often forget that sometimes, magic is bad. Morbius is the kind of magic you’d want to keep a lid on: a two-hour spell that makes viewers forget it actually stars Jared Leto, one of the few men alive in danger of being too interesting, thanks to his widely publicized overcommitment to Method acting and a public persona that frequently evokes “benevolent cult leader” vibes. Unfortunately, Morbius isn’t a good showcase for his talents the way its Sony/Marvel predecessor Venom was a showcase for Tom Hardy, even though the two movies share a similar structure. And a movie that apes Venom without an unpredictable performance at the center, it turns out, is a pretty lousy time. Like Venom, Morbius spins off a Spider-Man villain into a story that makes him the anti-hero of his own little corner of the world. (The film, as one gag from the trailers underlines, is set in the same universe as Venom.) Dr. Michael Morbius (Leto) is a brilliant scientist with a rare, debilitating blood disease, one that leaves him frail, unable to walk without support, and in regular need of blood transfusions

Dr. Morbius, we’re told, is one of the world’s foremost scientific minds, having developed a blue-tinged artificial blood that has “saved more lives than penicillin.” Yet he still has not found a cure for his disease something he desperately wants, not for his own sake, but for his childhood friend Milo (Matt Smith), who suffers from the same disease and funds Morbius’ research through his wealth. In a desperate attempt to test his first viable cure, Morbius uses himself as a guinea pig for a serum meant to rewrite his genome and make him into a hybrid human and vampire bat an experiment that’s off the books and unethical. (If it wasn’t, someone probably would have asked him to say “human/bat chimera” out loud, and re-consider whether the experiment was a good idea.) With the help of colleague and love interest Dr. Martine Bancroft (Adria Arjona), Morbius “accidentally” turns himself into a Living Vampire basically a regular vampire, but without the traditional church allergies. Morbius is the kind of film where it would serve viewers well not to sweat the details. Anyone wondering about the specifics of Morbius’ disease or superpowers is better off not trying to parse the film’s thin explanations. This is a film set in New York City but very clearly shot in London, where the crew taped up a few subway signs in a Tube station wall and called it a day. The film only truly comes to life when Matt Smith’s Milo assumes his villainous role, learning what Morbius has become and taking the serum himself. The newly vampiric Milo relishes the powers that horrify Morbius, enjoying the thrills of being superhuman, and casting off the scruples that keep Morbius feeding on artificial blue blood instead of real human blood. (The two of them repeatedly refer to this as drinking “red” or “blue,” which never stops being funny.) Herein lies the biggest problem for Morbius: The villain, who is not in the film nearly as much as he should be, is having the sort of fun Morbius ought to be having. Milo dances and preens every moment he’s on camera, in a performance that’s only marred by the CGI makeover both leads get when they vamp up, a choice that doesn’t seem much better than Buffy the Vampire Slayer-style prosthetics. Smith’s dynamism painfully underlines the lack of imagination and energy elsewhere in the film. Plainly shot, with a score (and a scene or two) that shamelessly ape Batman Begins, Morbius comes across as algorithmically calibrated to enter the blockbuster market as smoothly as possible. Its action is unimaginative, complete with exhausting slow-mo pauses. Its violence is toned down and defanged, even though it’s about, y’know, vampires. In spite of direction from Daniel Espinosa, who previously made 2017’s surprisingly creepy Life, Morbius does not convey any real atmosphere. If Instagram had a “blockbuster” filter, this film would use it the whole time. One of the important lessons of Venom’s success was that if unimaginative superhero franchise films must be churned out, they can still feel worthwhile if they’re fueled by smart, funny performances. Audiences do turn out for characters they love, but they also show up for characters played by people, by actors who give them weird quirks and specific mannerisms. Morbius is what happens when there’s a studio desire for another Venom, but without much thought as to how Venom connected with anyone. It’s only there to plug into a burgeoning crossover franchise. (As a pair of nonsensical mid-credits scenes indicate.) It’s also buck-wild that Morbius manages to do all this while starring Jared Leto. He’s the guy who made the Joker comically twisted, his hilariously transformative performance is the best part of House of Gucci, he’s doing extremely committed accent work in WeCrashed. This is a man who should be able to make Morbius a meme. Instead, he’s a victim, sucked dry by a big-budget movie that’s only interested in selling a sequel.

The Last of Us Part 2 Is 2020's Biggest Launch So Far, Second Biggest in Sony History

The Last of Us Part 2 is 2020's biggest launch in the United States so far, according to market research company, The NPD Group. Further, and according to the same source, the game is Sony's second-biggest launch in the United States ever. In other words, despite the controversy surrounding the game, despite the divide it caused, and despite the protests, it has seemingly been a massive success for PlayStation and Naughty Dog.

NPD doesn't go into specifics, but notes it had the biggest launch month of any game this year. And while 2020 has been largely light on big game releases, it has had a few, such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Final Fantasy VII Remake. Of course, with a new Call of Duty, Cyberpunk 2077, and some other heavy hitters coming this fall, the chance of The Last of Us Part 2 holding onto this achievement until December are slim, but for now, it's at the top. As for the Sony game it's behind, it's none other than Marvel's Spider-Man.

As for the month, right behind Naughty Dog's latest game was Call of Duty, Animal Crossing, GTA, and Mortal Kombat.

  • The Last of Us Part 2
  •  Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • Mortal Kombat 11
  • Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Ring Fit Adventure
  • NBA 2K20
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • Minecraft Dungeons
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  • Rainbow Six Siege
  • Minecraft
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
  • Borderlands 3
  • Need for Speed Heat
  • Persona 4 Golden
  • SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated
  • Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

While The Last of Us Part 2 is the biggest launch of the year, it hasn't been enough to make it the best-selling game of the year. That honor still belongs to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  • The Last of Us Part 2
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • NBA 2K20
  • Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot
  • MLB The Show 20
  • Resident Evil 3 Remake
  • Madden NFL 20
The Last of Us Part 2 is available on the PS4 and the PS4 only.
