It would be a good way to

It definitely fuels my idea that the people of the full moon were the
ancestors of the minks, originally from outer space. This is almost
entirely based on the fact that there were mink-like space pirates in
eneru's cover story of course.
But I think it really could be as simple as that, especially since we
now know that humankind is native to earth per the first world. Humanity
reached our modern earth like technology, found nuclear power, ruined
their world, then the minks showed up from outer space and brought some
life and dreams (I.E. Devil fruits) down with them, then they started
interbreeding -- half of the "Moon tribe" would make a half-moon.
That makes the d clan sort of misfits, outsiders, the descendants of
explorers from impossibly far away.
