Like he sacrificed his ability to exist as other people outside for the powers that he has and is only stable in that pointy shadow version of himself. Yeah, that is what i am thinking, a majority of the powers we're seeing him pull off aren't devil fruit related, but he's using a fruit power to enhance them & make them seem Like devils.
Like he can somehow make these evil cartoon monsters, but still has to hide a bullet inside one of them for it to do damage. On that angle, it's worth noting that the dancing trees and wooden houses didn't do a single bit of harm to anyone. Maybe on the whole, his fruit is basically harmless. It's a cartoon for kids but he's done his work scrubbing it to make it seem like a terror.
