It seems they were close in the past and obv some sort of splice happened in history to lead him to domination and joyboy to liberation. It's just wild how much vitiriol he harbors and just wearing it on his sleeve. Like i wonder if how much imu is keyed up will lead him to mess up? Idk, just a thought. Phew, luffy's gotta keep chowing down a little longer. I think the imu vs joyboy will be a freedom vs control argument. At least seems they are hinting at that.  Luffy is all about being free and imu is about power and control.

He can't control luffy or loki because they won't seek a quick power up that would take away their freedom. Freedom and chaos or control and stability. Not everyone in the navy is a good guy. Nor is every pirate. Vegapunk even pointed it out in conversations with dragon. Garp stayed in the navy for decades as he wanted to protect something.  I wonder what kind of "king" was joyboy supposed to be, since "king of the pirates" wasn't a thing back then. Roger wasn't trying to be a king of anything, he was just dubbed one, and then luffy wanted to follow in roger's and shanks' steps.

But for joyboy, there was an active plan to make him a king, as we know from emet. It could still be "king of the pirates" but with a forgotten meaning, different to what we have now. I think it's literally what luffy has thought king of the pirates means this whole time. Pirates are free, they don't listen to rulers, they don't have anyone who tells them how to act. King of the pirates is the most free man in the world.
