Made in Abyss Made a Room Full of Japanese Wrestlers Cry

Akihito Tsukushi's Made in Abyss is a cult hit among fans for its hard hitting moments, and that reputation has come across much stronger now that it's made a room full of Japanese pro wrestlers cry. Made in Abyss made its big anime debut a few years ago, and became quite the cult hit with fans as it saw its two main characters put through some of the most intense ordeals anyone could imagine. As one would expect, these ordeals were full of harsh heartbreaks and some major lows. The kind of lows that definitely pull out some tears.

It was the same for pro Sumo wrestler Shodai Naoya. Sankei Shimbun reported details on how (as detailed by Crunchyroll) Naoya had won three rounds back to back during the Autumn tournament at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, but his post match interview was actually all about anime.

Naoya revealed that he is an anime fan, and that he was recently obsessed with Made in Abyss. Revealing that the anime had actually made him cry, Naoya hilariously noted how he showed the anime to his fellow wrestlers. Well it turns out that he "forcibly showed" it to all of them, and "Everyone started crying at the same spot where I cried." He doesn't mention which spot where everyone cried, but there are several opportunities with a franchise like this.

There are several huge moments in the original Made in Abyss anime series that will most likely bring you to tears, but there are even more opportunities with its major sequel film, Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul. ComicBook.com recently reviewed this new project, and you can check it out at the link here. Here's an excerpt to get you started:

"Taking place after the events of the original Made in Abyss TV anime series, Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul is the follow-up fans have been waiting and hoping to see. An intense, yet at times serene experience that somehow packs the feelings of an entire season into a feature film. It may not be the most welcoming to non-fans curious about the franchise, but it makes the reward for those with prior knowledge all the more powerful."

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Finally Shares the Yukino and Hachiman Scene Fans Have Been Waiting For

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU will be bringing its series to an end with the next episode, but before the finale the anime finally gave us the Yukino and Hachiman scene that fans have been waiting to see all along. Ever since the anime first began, the central relationship between Hachiman Hikigaya and Yukino Yukinoshita has been one of the core elements of the franchise as fans saw the two steadily growing closer during their work as members of the service club. But as the series gears up for its finale with the third season, the two of them had been challenging their relationship.

One of the major problems the two of them were facing together with Yui Yuigahama was the fact that Hachiman and Yukino felt like they were in a co-dependent relationship with one another. The central conflict of the final season then grew more intense as they tried their hardest to push back against the idea and each other as a result.

But in the penultimate episode of My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Climax, the final season of the series overall, Hachiman had finally had enough of this and he and Yukino had a deep conversation for the first real time in the season. Now the two of them have officially confessed their love for one another.

The penultimate episode of the season saw Hachiman struggling with his feelings for Yukino, and thanks to a final push from his teacher, he finally found the words he wanted to say to her. This ends up having Yukino reveal her feelings for Hachiman as well, and the two of them confess that they want to devote their lives to one another from here on out. Whatever path the future holds for them, they want to be in each others' lives. It's what the series has been building to, and now the anime will be coming to an end.

OreGairu Season 3 Release Date & Everything You Need to Know

‘My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU’ or more popularly known as OreGairu is adored by many of the anime fans. Known for its nuanced storytelling and the way it handles teenage romance and the bitter realities, the show will literally swoon you off your feet.

The anime has been well-received by the fans since its initial release, and season 2 saw the same reaction. Since then, fans have been waiting for the third part of My Teen Romantic Comedy, SNAFU. However, it has been delayed due to COVID.

Delay & New Release Date

It is all thanks to the ongoing pandemic Covid-19 that this show also got postponed. It was supposed to release on the 10th of April only.

Theory Section

In the theory section, I will discuss various facts of the show like about the studio, what’s my take on the show, it is famous or not and about the mangaka himself too.

Basically, every technicality that accelerates/hinders the production of ‘OreGairu S3’.

About the Studio

Fans would be overjoyed to know that Studio Feel is returning for the final season. The first season was animated by Studio Brains.

Still, there was a shift in the studio in the second season where Studio Feel took over. There were some noticeable changes in the character design, but it was for good, and we all liked it.

About the Show

In my opinion, Oregairu is possibly the best high school rom-com drama out there. The show revolves around three characters who all have these contradicting perspectives and notions on life and people.

It dives into the psyche of all these characters and makes us understand their individual struggles. But what makes the show best is the witty and canny dialogues and the way it handles all of that.

Needless to say, but the truth must be spoken, Oregairu is for a very niche community. In this community, people admire characters for the way they are.

What makes it accessible?

Oregairu is critically acclaimed by many people because of the ideologies of Hachiman only. His take on the bittersweet life and how he perceives people is what makes the show much more intriguing and intricate than it already is.

Another thing about the anime is that it has a well-defined end goal, the creator knows where he is heading with the characters. Plus, it runs on several different smaller arcs, all at once, thus creating a comprehensive and an all-embracing story for its audience.

About the Mangaka

The creator of Oregairu is Wataru Watari. His other work is ‘Girlish Number,’ which is quite good.

Still, the very definition of brilliance lies in his other creation ‘Oregairu.’ Backed up by Ponkan8, the illustrator, the light novel series, rose to popularity in no time. They both completed the novel back in 2019, with a total of 14 volumes.

Production Update

The anime was to be broadcasted in April 2020, so one can easily make out that the production is all complete, and it was just because of the coronavirus outbreak, which led to its delay.

Key Visual

A key visual was released for the new season, and various fans of the show pointed out that Studio Feel was behind the animation as it resembled the character designs from the second season.

Expected Storyline

This is the last season of Oregairu, and I seriously don’t know how I will live without this show. Putting my emotions aside, let’s focus on the storyline of the third season —

It will continue after the huge cliffhanger we all got to see in the last season. The people of the volunteer club will face the problem of the High School Prom.

Although the prom is just another contrivance to all the questions that we face in our lives, just a heads up. This season, the characters will find their resolve to move forward in their lives and to speak up for themselves.

Recap of Season 1-2

Hikigaya Hachiman, the narcissistic protagonist with a very interesting set of ideas and notions towards life and society, is compelled to join the volunteer club by his teacher. And there, his life suddenly begins to change.

Both the seasons follow him and his friends on a journey of fun and self-discovery where they all develop to better human beings. The entire series makes you feel more and more connected with the characters with the passing of every episode.

Bound with Slice of Life and rom-com, this anime will undoubtedly find your way among your favorites, only if you are patient enough.

Cast and Staff

There is no change in the cast and staff.

  • Director – Kei Oikawa
  • Series Composition – Shoutarou Suga
  • Character Design – Yuuichi Tanaka
  • Takuya Eguchi as Hachiman Hikigaya
  • Saori Hayami as Yukino Yukinoshita
  • Nao Toyama as Yui Yuigahama
  • Ayane Sakura as Iroha Isshiki

About OreGairu

Written by Wataru Watari and Illustrated by Ponkan8, this story was adapted into a manga thrice. It was picked up for an animated adaptation by Brain’s Base. Still, it was animated by Feel Studio in its second season.

This anime is of the slice of life genre featuring the story of the pragmatic highschooler Hachiman Hikigaya. He is forced to be a part of a Service Club by his teacher alongside Yukino Yukinoshita and Yui Yuigahama. Despite having wildly different personalities and beliefs, they offer help to those in need.

World Trigger Season 3 Shares New Character Designs

After bringing the second season to an end a few years ago, Toei Animation surprised fans last year when it announced a new season of World Trigger was in the works. They were playing coy as to what this new series will be since they're not directly leading with "Season 3," but getting new episodes of this franchise is still an exciting prospect. There has yet to be any official confirmation as to when this new World Trigger will be releasing (especially now due to the complications of the novel coronavirus), but work on the new anime is moving forward just the same!

The official website for World Trigger shared a glimpse at several of the new characters and designs coming to the new season with looks at Osamu Mikumo, Kazuaki Oji, Yoko Katori, Tatsuhito Ikoma, and Takuma Yuba. These designs were handled by returning character designer for the new episodes, Toshihisa Kaiya.

While much of the cast and staff from the previous two seasons will be returning for the third entry, the director position has seen a bit of a shake up. Taking over from previous director Kouji Ogawa will be Morio Hatano, who most notably worked on the Future Trunks saga of Dragon Ball Super. But for those wanting familiar voices, Tomo Muranaka as Yuma Kuga, Yuki Kaji as Osamu Mikumo, Nao Tamura as Chika Amatori, Yuichi Nakamura as Yuichi Jin, and Nobunaga Shimazaki as Hyuse have all been confirmed to return for the season.

As mentioned, there unfortunately is no confirmed release date or window for the season as of this writing. Given that original series creator Daisuke Ashihara recently returned to the manga after a lengthy hiatus means that there will be plenty of new ground to cover when the anime finally does make its big return to screens. It's one fans have been waiting for, and hopefully it meets those expectations!

Goblin Slayer: Goblin's Crown Review

Review:
I can't say that I was disappointed by this OVA because frankly I wasn't expecting much from it in the first place. Condensing an entire book of content into 60 minutes of footage is bound to result in wonky pacing. Although I haven't read volume 5 of the novel series, which this OVA is based on, the story felt like a middle-of-the-road arc for the TV series, but compressed to the point where none of its emotional moments carried much weight.

As far as the story beats go, Goblin's Crown doesn't explore new territory. During a routine goblin extermination trip, the Goblin Slayer and his crew rescue a young swordswoman, who is (rather predictably at this point) a rape survivor. Although the horrible experience leaves her irrevocably changed, the Noble Fencer hasn't lost her will to fight. She wants to reclaim the sword the goblins stole from her, and she won't stop until she has her revenge.

The other new development in the story is the revelation that the goblins are getting smarter at a rather terrifying rate. The big goblin boss this time is able to use magic, a feat which was previously believed only to be available to the human-like races. But because this is only a 60 minute OVA, equivalent to around three TV anime episodes, he gets taken out fast, and there's not much time spent reflecting on the implications of the goblins' feats.

It's a pity that the themes of this OVA are undercooked because what I liked most about the TV series is the pathos. For example, the Sword Maiden's subplot was an earlier take on a rape survivor's plight, and what made it interesting was how she found no salvation even after the goblins were exterminated. The Goblin Slayer lost his humanity fighting the goblins, and the entire series so far has been about him gradually expanding his worldview beyond his trauma.

The Noble Fencer's story has strong parallels to the aforementioned characters, but her healing and redemption occurs in record time. It's implied that she's able to overcome the trauma because of the friendship she develops with the Priestess and High Elf Archer, but as far as this OVA goes, it's only an implication. They never have a heart-to-heart conversation; the Priestess is just there to take the Noble Fencer's hand when the goblins chase after them. While it's nice to see these little hints of female camaraderie in a series that has so far focused almost exclusively on the Goblin Slayer's relationships with other people, I really wish this aspect could have been given more time to develop because the Noble Fencer's character arc came off as very abrupt.

I also find it concerning for the long run how this series has chosen to escalate the threat of the goblins by making them more human-like. At one point in this OVA, it's shown that verbal communication between the goblins and other races is possible under the right circumstances. At this point, it's impossible to think of goblins as wild animals or pests; the only thing that distinguishes them from humans is that they are all evil.

Looking back on the series so far, I'd say that the themes of Goblin Slayer have been a precarious balancing act. It presents a fantasy race of pure evil because it's exploring how humans would cope in the face of such constant evil. Through interacting with the evil beings, human souls become tainted. Stare too long into the darkness and it starts to consume you. Goblin Slayer didn't need a hackneyed twist like "the goblins were corrupted humans all along!" to provoke questions about humanity's relationship with their inner beast, which I appreciated.

At the same time, this angle of portraying goblins as pure monsters can only work when their observable traits are not human-like. By giving the goblins so many human traits, the story is basically presenting a scenario where it's completely okay to write off an entire sentient race as scum. It's not thought-provoking and could easily be read as a justification for having a generally racist outlook on life; I wish the author could have picked a different way to escalate the threat of the goblins instead of making them rely so much on human technology and culture.

As a side effect of the goblins being so human-like in this OVA, the fights are also boring. The goblins never act in ways you don't expect from grunt soldiers; you could substitute them for Star Wars' Stormtroopers and you'll get a sense for what the battles are like. Here, they man a castle, and they also can't aim for squat. There's one scene where the characters stand up and have a dramatic shout-y moment for minutes on end while the goblins rain arrows on them, and nobody gets hit. The story's tension drops precipitously when the intelligence of the enemies fluctuates depending on narrative convenience.

At least this OVA still maintains its violent action as its appeal point... although the production values are about on par with the TV anime's early episodes (which weren't terribly impressive to begin with). There's lots of CG blood and goblins, and the 2D animation still feels kind of stilted, which kind of kills the immediacy of the violence. Yeah, there's decapitated flying heads and sexual violence, which the OVA makes a point of flashing back to multiple times, but the shock factor has pretty much dried up at this point, so I doubt that anyone who sat through the TV series would be particularly fazed by it. Or maybe I only had this reaction because I watched the Made in Abyss movie last week, and that was some genuinely gruesome stuff. Either way, I've seen worse.

I do want to compliment the music, at least, because I liked the ending theme. The song had a lot of ambiance that would have fit a story with more gravitas. The soundtrack was also appropriately dramatic, lending urgency to some of the battle sequences that was missing in the animation.

Overall, I'd say that Goblin's Crown is a little below average by Goblin Slayer standards. The Noble Fencer's story had potential to become an interesting foil to the Goblin Slayer and the Priestess, but the lack of breathing room in this OVA made her subplot fall flat. By cutting out the quiet moments and introspection, this OVA focuses almost entirely on the violence and action, and it's become evident that this aspect of the anime is producing increasingly diminishing returns. I'm sure that Goblin Slayer fans may get a kick out of seeing the action on the big screen, but I don't think the production values warranted a theatrical release. It may be worth checking it out when it gets a home video release, or better yet, just read the novels.

Grade:
Overall : D
Story : D-
Animation : C-
Art : C-
Music : B

+ Noble Fencer's camaraderie with the Priestess seems potentially interesting, good ending theme and soundtrack
− Lack of introspection or pathos hurts the emotional impact, story seems very abridged, goblins' intelligence seems like a narrative contrivance

New Kingdom Hearts Mobile Game Settles on Extremely Normal Title

Last week, Square Enix tasked Kingdom Hearts fans with figuring out the title to the next mobile entry in the series, codenamed Project Xehanort. Even that promotional move makes it sound like Square is well aware of how goofy the series' naming conventions have been in the past, so we were bracing for something truly absurd. Well then, what did we end up with?

Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road.  Seriously? That's the most normal title the series has outside of the mainline roman numeral sequels! Apparently this free-to-play game with in-app purchases, of course will follow a young Xehanort when it launches on iOS and Android devices around the world. Square Enix plans to unveil more info in the middle of February. If you're current on Kingdom Hearts, be sure to check out our recent post-mortem after the events of the Re:Mind DLC.
