The timeline doesn't really line up for brook, he barely knew of roger. Brook was already living through his hell at the time of god valley. King davy d. Xebec had his daughter kidnapped and used access to the reverie to try to save her. Found her reversi'd and without her memories serving imu. Forced to run away and come back another day. This gambit which was meant to be simple rescue put his entire people in danger so all the higher-ups would've evacuated and some become pirates. Xebec's raid on mariejoa was only 4 years before brook died; that is a perfectly reasonable amount of time for him to leave god valley and sail the world before getting lost at sea.
The relationship of the rocks pirates to thriller bark, and the relationship between brook and gunko being highlighted immediately prior to this flashback, makes it seem likely that there has to be a connection between the characters. Otherwise, why would gunko have been in the panel where xebec confronted imu? What storytelling purpose does it serve to put her there? Not to prove she doesn't age - oda could've saved that for today's chapter, where she appeared with the manmeyers.
It all lines up so neatly, it'd feel strange at this point to return to present-day elbaph and have brook explain how he and gunko are from some completely unrelated kingdom we've never heard of before. I mean how does that work? So then gunko is from god valley? Don't we literally see gunko when xebec goes in the secret room and sees imu? That means that imu was aware of god valley and that it was special if gunko is from there. Brook is probably from a different nation that got lost or was opposing the world government and eventually got conquered and imu for revenge got gunko.
