I'm betting it goes back to whitebeards line about choosing your fruit wisely. What if having a kid while you have a fruit lets you pass on the ability to eat that fruit without counting against the 1 of limit or something? And rocks was playing the long game with him and blackbeards mom, getting strong fruits to ensure their son could then find and consume those fruits for the power to pull off whatever rocks' goals were?
