Now, about the
Devil Fruits sometimes it feels like their mastery depends entirely on what the plot needs. If the story requires it, the user just knows how to use it (like young
Luffy or
Momonosuke). If not, we suddenly get
Kaido flying in full dragon form or Kuma using his powers like a seasoned veteran.
That said, it does make sense that different fruits have different learning curves. Over the story, we’ve seen users start out clumsy but still have some basic instincts.
Zoan fruits, for example, are probably the easiest to use on the fly just switch between human and animal forms.
Paramecia fruits vary wildly depending on their nature. The “Gomu Gomu no Mi” seems especially tricky to use effectively in combat, considering how Luffy had to train for years just to make his powers useful.
Kaido’s first transformation in this chapter actually felt more forced by his powers than something he consciously did he just went with it. Both he and Momonosuke could fly (walk on clouds) from the start, but Momo had mental blocks holding him back his fear of heights and his hatred of dragons. Being a kid probably didn’t help either.
Luffy, on the other hand, immediately understood how to stretch and his immunity to blunt attacks, but he had to train to make those abilities practical in battle. Zoan users rely more on raw physical strength, so while training helps, they can still function without it. That said, even someone like Kaku initially struggled with his hybrid form before mastering it quickly, while Chopper showed us how most Zoan users never reach their full potential.
Also, just to clarify Kuma isn’t healing people, he’s sending them away, which probably requires even more precision and mastery.
Momonosuke could fly from the beginning too that’s how he and Luffy escaped the trash compartment. The main difference between him and Kaido is confidence.
Kaku botched his hybrid transformation at first, Kalifa’s technique was messy, and Sabo was surprised by how the fire didn’t burn him he even mimicked Ace before developing his own style. All of them were skilled fighters who adapted fast, unlike young Luffy or Momo, who had to learn from scratch.
