The man's feeling that he killed his wife and kid, and that his life's work has all been for nothing with him destined to die a failure all at the same time. It's honestly one of the most tragic stories in one piece at this point. Flashbacks including previous users of devil fruits is such a small but amazing detail. In this vein, am I right in thinking captain john was the previous owner of kidd's fruit? Noticed that a couple of chapters ago.
